The 1858-S Double Eagle is an early release from the San Francisco Mint and comes from the time of the California Gold Rush. During this period, the San Francisco facility played a major role in turning newly mined western gold into official US coinage. As a Pre-1933 issue, the coin is especially appealing because gold pieces struck before 1933 remained legal to own after President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued the 1933 Executive Order that restricted private gold ownership, making later circulation-era gold coins far more difficult to collect.

All 1858-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins offered here are graded AU55. This About Uncirculated grade places the coin toward the upper end of the AU scale (50–58). Coins in AU55 condition typically show only light wear on the highest points, while still retaining much of their original detail and luster. CAC authentication adds extra reassurance, as the CAC label confirms the coin meets strict standards for quality within its assigned grade.

The obverse of the 1858-S Pre-33 Liberty Gold Double Eagle features Lady Liberty in left-profile relief. She wears a coronet bearing the inscription “LIBERTY,” with 13 stars around the design and the date at the bottom.

On the reverse, the coin displays a heraldic eagle with spread wings holding arrows and an olive branch. The design includes the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “TWENTY D.” This is the Type I reverse design, which was later updated in 1866 to include the national motto and again in 1877 when the denomination was revised to spell out DOLLARS instead of using the abbreviation.
