The Draped Bust design is one of the earliest coin styles from the young United States Mint, seen on several denominations between 1795 and 1807. Its obverse shows Lady Liberty with flowing hair and a cloth draped over her shoulder, a nod to classical ideals and the values of the new nation. Today, 1805 Draped Bust Large Cent Coins are available in certified condition from BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
The Draped Bust artwork is credited to portrait painter Gilbert Stuart—well known for painting George Washington—with engraving by Robert Scot, the first Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint. This shared look appeared on half dimes, dimes, quarters, half dollars, and silver dollars, helping unify early American coinage.
All 1805 Draped Bust Large Cent Coins offered here come sealed in PCGS slabs and carry an About Uncirculated 53 grade. AU53 pieces generally show medium to near-full luster, with only light friction on the highest points of the design. The BN designation applies to copper issues and indicates the coin retains less than 5% of its original red color.
On the obverse of the 1805 Draped Bust Large Cent, Lady Liberty appears in right-profile relief. Her hair flows behind her, and a drape rests around her neckline. Historical notes suggest Gilbert Stuart modeled Liberty’s look on Philadelphia socialite Ann Willing Bingham from the early 1800s.
The reverse of 1805 Draped Bust Large Cent Coins uses a straightforward layout common on early U.S. copper. The denomination sits at the center, encircled by a wreath. Surrounding legends include the issuing nation and the fractional value of the coin, shown as 1/100.
