Product Details

The Barber Quarter, minted from 1892 through 1916, has become increasingly popular with collectors over time. Many numismatists appreciate both its classic design and the difficulty of completing a full set. The series was created by Charles E. Barber, the Chief Engraver of the United States Mint at the time, and coins were struck at four different mints during its production. This variety resulted in a number of tougher dates and conditionally scarce coins for collectors to seek out. The example offered here is a 1916-D Barber Quarter from the final year of the series, certified Mint State 62 by the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS). Right now, the 1916-D Barber Quarter is available from BullionMax.

Coin Highlights:

  • Arrives in a protective plastic slab!
  • Final year of release for Barber Quarters!
  • Declared mintage of 6,540,800 coins at the Denver Mint!
  • Contains .1808 troy oz of actual silver content.
  • Bears a face value of $.25 (USD) backed by the federal government.
  • Issued a grade of Mint State 62 by the PCGS.
  • The obverse features a bust of Lady Liberty.
  • On the reverse is the heraldic eagle.
  • Includes a D mint mark from the Denver Mint.

Each 1916-D Barber Quarter offered here comes in Mint State 62 condition. Coins graded MS62 generally show solid overall eye appeal, though clusters of small contact marks may appear across the surface. It is also common for a few larger marks to appear in the main focal areas, and hairlines are often visible to the naked eye on coins at this grade level.

The 1916-D Barber Quarter represents the final year of a long-running coin series that also included matching designs for the dime and half dollar. Barber’s coinage served in American commerce for more than two decades before being replaced. In fact, during 1916, the United States Mint began producing the new Standing Liberty Quarter design, which would succeed the Barber design.

The obverse of the 1916-D Barber Quarter displays a right-facing portrait of Liberty created by Charles E. Barber. The design reflects the neoclassical artistic style Barber preferred during his time as Chief Engraver. Liberty wears a Phrygian cap, a symbol historically associated with freedom, and the cap is adorned with a laurel wreath representing victory. A ribbon is tied at the back of her head to complete the design.

On the reverse of the 1916-D Barber Quarter, the design centers on a heraldic American eagle with its wings spread wide. A shield rests on the eagle’s chest, reinforcing the national symbolism of the image. In its right talon the eagle holds an olive branch, while its left talon grasps a bundle of thirteen arrows, representing the nation’s readiness to defend itself while also seeking peace.
