As British forces advanced in the Second Boer War, the aging Paul Kruger left the Transvaal in 1900. He traveled by train to Lourenço Marques (now Maputo) in Portuguese East Africa and then sailed to Europe to seek help for the Boer cause. Kruger spent his remaining years in exile, mainly in the Netherlands, where he was welcomed as a symbol of resistance. His efforts to gain European intervention did not succeed, and he passed away in Clarens, Switzerland, in 1904 at the age of 78.
