Modern collectors welcomed the return of two of the US Mint’s most recognizable silver dollar designs in 2021. To mark the 100th anniversary of the final Morgan Dollar and the debut of the Peace Dollar, the US Mint revived both classic designs for a new generation. Beginning in 2023, the Mint committed to striking these silver dollars on an annual basis, making them a continuing favorite among collectors. Today, certified Peace Silver Dollar Coins are available to purchase from BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
Each Peace Silver Dollar Coin offered here is graded Mint State 69. Coins at this level retain full mint luster and sharp detail, with no more than two very small imperfections. These minor marks are typically tiny contact points or faint hairlines that do not appear in major focal areas. Buyers should be aware that this listing includes coins dated 2023 and later, and slab labels may vary in style depending on availability.
The story of the Peace Dollar is closely tied to changes in US silver policy during the early 20th century. The Pittman Act of 1918 authorized the melting of millions of Morgan Silver Dollars to provide silver for wartime needs and international obligations. The law also required that replacement silver dollars be struck using silver mined within the United States. As a result, silver dollar coinage resumed in 1921 after a 16-year pause, first with the Morgan design and then with the introduction of the Peace Dollar later that same year.
The obverse of the Peace Dollar showcases a left-facing portrait of Lady Liberty created by sculptor Anthony de Francisci. Liberty wears a crown with radiating spikes, symbolizing hope, progress, and freedom. De Francisci modeled the design after his wife, Teresa, giving the coin a softer and more modern appearance than earlier depictions of Liberty.
On the reverse of the Peace Dollar, a bald eagle is shown resting on a rock while holding an olive branch. This calm pose was chosen to reflect the nation’s desire for peace following World War I. The design stands in contrast to earlier silver dollars that featured more aggressive or flight-ready eagles.
