The Perth Mint rolled out the Australian Silver Kookaburra in 1990, launching what would become one of the most well-known silver bullion programs. A key feature of the series is its yearly design update highlighting the kookaburra, giving each date a look of its own and appealing to both collectors and investors.

All 1990 1 oz Australian Silver Kookaburra Coins offered here arrive in protective plastic flips. For the debut year, the mint issued only this 1 oz silver version with a capped mintage of 300,000 coins, and the full amount was sold that year. Notably, 1991 is the only other year when the series included just a 1 oz silver coin.

On the obverse of 1990 Australian Silver Kookaburras, you’ll see the third-generation portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Designed in 1985 by Raphael Maklouf, this right-profile effigy shows the Queen wearing the George IV State Diadem. Of the portraits used during her reign, this was the shortest in use.

The reverse of the 1990 1 oz Silver Kookaburra Coin presents the first design of the series. Created by Stuart Devlin, the artwork shows a kookaburra perched on a tree stump in right-profile relief, setting the visual theme that collectors would come to expect each year.
