Each 1988 1/4 oz Australian Platinum Koala Coin is packaged in an individual flip. The Platinum Koala Series debuted in 1988 as the first major platinum bullion coin program introduced by an industrialized nation. At launch, the series included 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz coins. All four weights remained available until the series concluded in 2000.

The program was ultimately discontinued after 2000 as global demand for platinum softened. Over its lifespan, the series expanded beyond the original four weights. Beginning in 1991, a 1/20 oz coin was added. In 1992, larger options, including 1 kilogram, 10 oz, and 2 oz platinum coins, were introduced, giving buyers a broader range of choices.

The obverse of the 1988 Australian Platinum Koala displays the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. In addition to Her Majesty’s portrait, the design includes the coin’s $25 (AUD) face value and the name of the issuing nation. This third-generation portrait of the Queen was created in 1985 by Raphael Maklouf and appeared on many Commonwealth coin designs of the era.

The reverse of the 1988 1/4 oz Platinum Koala Coin features the first design in the series’ annually changing lineup. It shows a seated koala in front-facing relief against a simple background field. The design is accompanied by inscriptions noting the series name, year of issue, weight, and purity. The artwork for this inaugural release was completed by Michael Tracey.
