The obverse of the 2026 Gold Lunar Horse features King Charles III’s official effigy as used by the Perth Mint. This portrait was created by Dan Thorne and shows the king in left-profile without a crown, marking his debut on Australian coinage.

On the reverse, you’ll find an active horse rearing up on its hind legs. The background shows rolling grasslands and mountains, giving the horse a dynamic sense of motion. A small security feature is hidden on this side—it’s a letter that can only be seen using magnification.

The Horse is one of the most energetic and free-spirited animals in the Chinese Zodiac. Modern celebrations of Horse years often include red decorations for good luck, and imagery of horses is used in clothing, lanterns, and more during these festivities.
