The $20 Liberty Head gold double eagle debuted in 1849 during the California Gold Rush, meeting the need for higher-value coinage in everyday circulation. Chief Engraver James B. Longacre created the classic portrait of Liberty with a coronet crown that defined the series. Now, 1873 Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins with the Open 3 date style are available online at BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
The obverse of the 1873 Pre-33 Liberty Gold Double Eagle shows a left-facing Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed with LIBERTY. A ring of 13 stars surrounds the portrait to honor the original states. The year of issue appears below the bust, serving as the coin’s date mark.
On the reverse of the 1873 $20 Liberty Double Eagle is the Great Seal of the United States. A heraldic bald eagle faces forward with a shield on its chest, clutching arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other. As a Type II reverse, the design adds the motto IN GOD WE TRUST while retaining the TWENTY D. denomination inscription.
In 1873, the $20 Liberty Double Eagle was struck at Philadelphia, Carson City, and San Francisco. Combined production topped 2.7 million coins, with the largest outputs from Philadelphia (about 1.7 million) and San Francisco (about 1.04 million). The coins offered here are Open 3 pieces, a nickname for the wider, more open loops used in the “3” of the 1873 date on certain dies.
These 1873 Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins are certified Mint State 63. MS63 coins display slightly impaired mint luster with numerous small contact marks, including some in focal areas, and occasional scattered heavier marks.
