The $20 Liberty Head gold double eagle debuted in 1849 after the California Gold Rush brought a surge of gold into the market and prompted the need for higher denominations. Designed by Chief Engraver James B. Longacre, the coin shows a coroneted portrait of Liberty. Today, BullionMax offers 1875 Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins that have been certified and graded for quality.
Coin Highlights:
In 1875, Liberty Double Eagles were made at three United States Mint locations. Most coins came from the San Francisco Mint, which struck about 1.23 million pieces. Of the total 1,639,871 coins issued that year, Philadelphia produced 295,720 coins, and Carson City struck 111,151 coins.
Each 1875 Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle available here is graded Mint State 63. MS63 pieces show slightly muted mint luster with numerous small contact marks, and a few heavier scattered marks may be present. Even with these marks, the overall look of the coin remains appealing.
Obverse designs on 1875 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Coins feature a left-facing portrait of Lady Liberty. She wears a coronet inscribed with LIBERTY, surrounded by 13 stars around the rim. The date is shown below the portrait.
The reverse of 1875 Pre-33 Liberty Gold Double Eagles presents the Great Seal of the United States. This detailed heraldic eagle holds arrows and an olive branch, with a shield on its chest. As a Type II reverse, the design includes the motto IN GOD WE TRUST and retains the TWENTY D. denomination inscription.
