The 2 oz Silver Kookaburra was issued with an unlimited mintage for 2004, and the final total reached 13,969 coins. Among the larger sizes, the 2 oz mintage topped the totals for the 1 Kilo and 10 oz coins, while the 1 oz coin had the highest overall mintage.

Kookaburras are strongly territorial and often stay close to home. Young birds commonly remain as helpers within their parents’ territory before moving to nearby ranges. Historically, the laughing kookaburra lived in eastern and southeastern Australia, but people introduced the species to Tasmania in the 1900s and to parts of southwestern Western Australia in the late 1800s and early 1900s, expanding its range.

The obverse of the 2004 Australian Silver Kookaburra features Ian Rank-Broadley’s right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. She wears the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara, with inscriptions noting her name, the issuing nation, and the coin’s face value. This effigy appeared on Australian coinage from 1998 through 2017.

The reverse of the 2004 2 oz Silver Kookaburra presents two birds in a simple, clear scene. In front, one kookaburra rests on a small branch. In the background, a second bird is shown in flight overhead.
