The obverse of the 2004 Proof Platinum Eagle Coins shows Lady Liberty. The close-up of Liberty’s face is inspired by the Statue of Liberty and was first created in 1997 by John Mercanti, the 12th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, specifically for the Platinum Eagle Series.

On the reverse of the 2004 Proof American Platinum Eagle, you’ll find Daniel Chester French’s statue titled America from the exterior of the U.S. Customs House in New York City. The scene presents a seated female figure holding a torch in her right hand with an American bald eagle at her feet.

The 2004 Proof Platinum Eagle issue is one of only four years in the program that sits outside a broader design theme. The other examples are the 2003 Proof Platinum Eagle featuring an American bald eagle and the U.S. flag on a pine tree, along with the original eagle-in-flight designs used in 1997 and 2017.
