Each 2024 10 oz Australian The Next Generation Emu Mother and Baby Silver Coin ships in a secure plastic capsule. The coin is struck on a piedfort blank, a thicker version of a standard coin, which increases its weight while keeping the diameter similar. This format has origins in French minting and is commonly used for collectible releases.

Although the design features a mother and chicks, it’s actually the male emu that raises the young. After the female lays her dark green eggs, she leaves the nest, while the male remains to incubate the eggs for about eight weeks. During this time, the male rarely eats and dedicates himself to protecting and warming the eggs until they hatch.

The obverse of the coin features a 2024 effigy of King Charles III designed by Dan Thorne. This left-facing portrait of the King does not show a crown and is the first version of his likeness to appear on Australian coinage.

The reverse showcases a scene of a parent emu and three small chicks. The male emu plays a key role in the chicks’ survival, guarding them from danger by puffing up, making loud sounds, and even chasing away threats. He stays with the young emus for up to six months until they are ready to live on their own.
