Product Details

In 1987, the Chinese Gold Panda series was still building its story. That year stands out because it’s the only time the Chinese Mint struck Gold Pandas at two branch facilities. Offered here are 1987-S 1/10 oz Chinese Gold Panda Coins, a date tied to the Shanghai Mint and a unique moment in the program’s history.

Coin Highlights:

  • Arrives in a protective plastic flip!
  • 6th year of issue in the Chinese Gold Panda Series!
  • Struck by the Shanghai Mint!
  • Declared mintage of 135,000 coins!
  • Contains 1/10 troy oz of .999 pure gold.
  • Face value of 10 Yuan backed by the People’s Republic of China.
  • Obverse features the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests.
  • Reverse depicts a panda drinking from a pond.

Each 1987-S 1/10 oz Chinese Gold Panda Coin comes secured in a plastic flip. These 1/10 oz gold pieces were made at the Shanghai Mint, noted by the “S” mint mark on the reverse. In 1987, production took place at both Shanghai and Shenyang—still the only year the series used two branch mints.

Giant pandas are easy to recognize thanks to their black-and-white coats, with dark patches around the eyes, ears, legs, and shoulders contrasting with lighter fur elsewhere. Built with thick, insulating hair and a sturdy frame, they are suited to cooler, mountainous habitats. Adult pandas commonly weigh between 220 and 330 pounds and can measure up to six feet in length.

The obverse of the 1987-S Chinese Gold Panda shows the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests, the centerpiece of the Temple of Heaven in Beijing. This building has appeared on the series every year since 1982, creating a steady visual theme across the program.

On the reverse of 1987-S 1/10 oz Gold Panda Coins, the year’s design shows a panda leaning to sip water from a pond—a one-year-only image used just for 1987. Pandas are known for round faces and a gentle look, and their strong jaws and broad molars are well suited for breaking down bamboo, their primary food.
