Product Details

Giant pandas live only in select mountain areas of central China, mainly in Sichuan, with smaller groups in Shaanxi and Gansu. They prefer cool, misty forests between 5,000 and 10,000 feet where bamboo grows thick and steady—their main food. China has featured the panda on its national bullion coins since 1982. Now, 1998 1 oz Chinese Gold Panda Coins with Large Dates are available online from BullionMax.

Coin Highlights:

  • Coins ship in sealed protective plastic!
  • Distinct Large Date style on the year!
  • One-year-only 1998 Panda artwork!
  • Contains 1 troy oz of .999 pure gold.
  • Legal tender in China with a face value of 100 Yuan.
  • Obverse shows the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests.
  • Reverse features a Giant Panda resting on a rock and holding bamboo.
  • Struck by the Shenyang Mint.

In the obverse design of the 1998 1 oz Gold Panda, you’ll see the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests. This landmark building is part of the Temple of Heaven complex and has appeared on Panda coins since the series began. The view looks up from the base of the main staircase, highlighting the building’s round, tiered roof.

For the reverse of the 1998 Chinese Gold Panda, the mint presents a Giant Panda lounging on a rock. The panda holds a sprig of bamboo in one paw, a simple scene that connects the coin to the animal’s everyday life. Panda habitats are known for steep slopes and dense bamboo beneath conifer and hardwood trees, giving cover and food in the same place.

Historically, giant pandas ranged across wider parts of southern and eastern China. Over time, habitat loss and development split that range into separate mountain areas. These isolated groups have fewer chances to mix, which can limit genetic variety and make the species more vulnerable.

These 1998 1 oz Chinese Gold Panda Coins come sealed in plastic pouches. This release is part of the Large Date variety, identified by larger numerals in the date. In 1998, Large Date coins were produced at the Shenyang Mint. The combined mintage of Large Date and Small Date Gold Pandas that year was 20,507 coins, and many were later melted during the late-1990s Asian financial crisis.
