The $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle debuted in 1907 during President Theodore Roosevelt’s push to bring more artistic style to U.S. coins. He tapped famed sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens to craft designs that could stand alongside the finest ancient Greek coinage. Today, certified 1927 $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle Coins are available online from BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
The obverse of the 1927 $20 Gold Double Eagle shows Lady Liberty in full-length relief. She strides forward holding a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. The U.S. Capitol appears near her feet, with sun rays fanning out behind to complete a bold, uplifting scene.
On the reverse of the 1927 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle, an American bald eagle soars in left-profile relief. The bird glides above a rising sun at the horizon. As a Type III strike, the coin features a lower-relief format, Arabic numerals for the date on the obverse, and the national motto, IN GOD WE TRUST, on the reverse.
Saint-Gaudens drew on classical Greco-Roman influences and the allegorical figure of Victory to recast Liberty as a forward-moving figure, replacing the static portraits common on earlier U.S. coins. He closely studied ancient coins and medals—especially Greek dekadrachms—valuing their high relief and refined artistry.
These 1927 $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagles are certified in Mint State 66 (MS66). In this grade, coins display above-average mint luster and only three or four minor contact marks. Under magnification, a few light hairlines may appear, with only a small number of marks present in the main focal areas.
