The $20 Saint-Gaudens double eagle debuted in 1907 as part of President Theodore Roosevelt’s push to refresh US coin designs. He enlisted sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens to create a look that matched the artistry of classic ancient coins. Today, certified 1927 $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle Coins are available at BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
The 1927 issue was the last time in the series that three mints struck Double Eagles in the same year: Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco all produced coins. After that, Philadelphia handled most runs. In 1928, 1929, 1932, and 1933, only Philadelphia issued coins. San Francisco alone struck the 1930 coins, and in 1931 both Philadelphia and Denver produced pieces, with Denver making just 106,500 out of more than 3 million total that year.
Each 1927 $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle offered here is graded Mint State 65+. An MS65 coin shows strong eye appeal and above-average luster with light contact marks in the fields and no major distractions at the main focal points. The “plus” designation notes examples at the upper end of the MS65 range.
The obverse of the 1927 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle features Lady Liberty in full length, facing forward. She steps toward the viewer holding a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. The U.S. Capitol appears near her feet, while rays of sunshine extend across the background.
The reverse of the 1927 $20 Gold Double Eagle shows an American bald eagle in flight. Seen in left profile, the eagle glides above a rising sun on the horizon. As a Type III piece, this low-relief version uses Arabic numerals for the date on the obverse and includes the national motto IN GOD WE TRUST on the reverse.
