When the American Platinum Eagle debuted in 1997, the United States Mint used the same design on both the obverse and reverse sides of its bullion and proof versions. That changed in 1998 when the Mint began introducing unique reverse designs for the proof coins each year through 2016. Many of these designs were part of smaller series with shared themes. The first of those was the Vistas of Liberty collection. Right now, BullionMax offers 2002 Proof American Platinum Eagle 4-Coin Sets for collectors.
Coin Set Highlights:
Each set comes with four coins: 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz Proof Platinum Eagles. All are housed in protective capsules and packaged together inside an official United States Mint box. The set also includes a Certificate of Authenticity. These proof coins are struck with sharp, frosted visuals and polished, mirrored backgrounds.
Between 1998 and 2002, the US Mint created the Vistas of Liberty series for Proof Platinum Eagles. This series featured bald eagles flying through different landscapes across the United States. The designs in the series were crafted by two artists: Thomas D. Rogers designed the 1998 and 2001 reverses, while Al Maletsky handled the artwork for 1999, 2000, and 2002.
The obverse side of each 2002 Proof Platinum Eagle carries the Statue of Liberty’s face. John Mercanti designed this portrait in 1997 when the Platinum Eagle series began. This same design appeared on all Proof Platinum Eagles from 1997 through 2017 and continues to be used on the bullion coins.
On the reverse of each coin in the 2002 set, an American bald eagle is shown swooping down toward a lake, aiming to catch a trout leaping from the water. The background includes snow-covered mountain peaks, representing a scene from the Northwestern United States. This was the final image in the Vistas of Liberty series.
