Product Details

The Canadian Gold Maple Leaf is a widely recognized gold coin produced each year by the Royal Canadian Mint. First introduced in 1979, it has become one of the longest-running gold coin programs. Over the years, the series has expanded to include various weights and even different precious metals. Right now, BullionMax has 1985 1/4 oz Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coins available to purchase.

Coin Highlights:

  • Comes with a protective plastic flip!
  • 4th issue of 1/4 oz Gold Maple Leafs!
  • Final mintage of 609,200 coins!
  • Contains 1/4 Troy oz of .9999 pure gold.
  • The face value of $10 (CAD) is fully backed by the Canadian government.
  • On the obverse is an early bust of Queen Elizabeth II.
  • The reverse features the sugar maple leaf.

When the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf series launched in 1979, only the 1 oz gold coin was available. A few years later in 1982, the Royal Canadian Mint added 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz versions, and continued expanding the series with more weights in later years. The early coins included a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II created in 1965 by Arnold Machin. This portrait was the last Canadian effigy of the Queen designed by a British artist.

Each 1985 1/4 oz Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coin comes in a plastic flip for protection. These coins are made with 24-karat gold and were among the first bullion coins to feature this level of purity, beginning with the 1982 release.

The obverse of the 1985 Gold Maple Leaf features the second official portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Created by Arnold Machin, this design shows the Queen as a young woman and first appeared on British coins before making its way to Canadian currency. It was used on the Gold Maple Leaf until 1989.

On the reverse, you’ll see the well-known image of a sugar maple leaf. This design was created in 1979 by Walter Ott for the debut of the Gold Maple Leaf series. It remains a staple on all versions of the Maple Leaf coin, including those made of silver, platinum, and palladium.
