When the Gold Eagle Series launched in 1986, the proof coin was only made in a 1 oz weight. It wasn’t until 1987 that the U.S. Mint expanded the proof lineup to include a 1/2 oz coin. A year later, the 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz proof coins were introduced, rounding out the full range of fractional options.

The obverse side of the 2013-W Proof American Gold Eagle features a classic design by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. This image was first used on the $20 Gold Double Eagle in 1907. It shows Lady Liberty striding forward with a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other, framed by sun rays and a ring of stars, with the Capitol building in the distance.

On the reverse, you’ll find a design by Miley Busiek that depicts a family of bald eagles. A male eagle flies overhead while a female tends to the hatchlings in a nest. This image was created specifically for the Gold Eagle series and was used for more than three decades.
