The Mexican Mint, known as La Casa de Moneda de México, has been producing coinage since 1535, making it the oldest mint in the Americas. Originally established to strike coins for the Spanish Empire’s colonies, the mint now issues Mexico’s official bullion coins. One of its key releases is the Mexican Libertad Series, which began in 1981. Right now, you can purchase the 2013 1 oz Mexican Gold Libertad Coin from BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
The obverse of the coin features the official coat of arms of Mexico. This emblem has changed several times since Mexico gained independence, reflecting cultural and political developments. The version used today was adopted in 1968. It shows a golden eagle perched on a prickly pear cactus, clutching a rattlesnake in its beak and talon, with a background of water and a rock.
Each 2013 1 oz Mexican Gold Libertad Coin is packaged in a plastic flip for protection. In 2013, the Mexican Mint returned to minting all five sizes in the Gold Libertad series, including this 1 oz coin. This marked a return to normal after the 2012 release included only the 1 oz version.
On the obverse, the main design is the modern coat of arms, with the eagle and snake at the center. Surrounding this are 10 smaller coats of arms that have appeared on Mexican coins throughout the country’s history. One of these is the earliest known version, featured in the Codex Mendoza from the 1500s.
The reverse design highlights the famous Winged Victory statue, a symbol of Mexican independence. She stands in front of the peaks of Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl, two volcanoes with deep roots in Mexican folklore.
