Polar bears live throughout the Arctic, roaming sea ice and coastal regions in places like Alaska (USA), Canada, Russia, Greenland (Denmark), and Norway’s Svalbard islands. These large predators are most often seen in Canada’s Hudson Bay, the Beaufort Sea, and the Arctic Archipelago. Polar bears have also become a recurring theme in Canadian coin design, including this annual 1/10 oz gold release. Right now, 2018 1/10 oz Canadian Gold Polar Bear Coins are available from BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
Polar bears split from brown bears about 400,000 to 600,000 years ago during the Pleistocene epoch. This evolutionary change was fairly recent and happened as some brown bears became isolated in northern areas during ice ages. Over time, those bears adapted to life on the sea ice. DNA research shows that polar bears developed features that helped them survive in icy environments, transforming from forest-dwelling omnivores into powerful marine hunters.
Each 2018 1/10 oz Canadian Gold Polar Bear Coin is housed in a protective plastic flip. These coins feature detailed radial lines, visible on the background of the obverse and around the rim of the reverse, adding security and visual texture.
The obverse of the 2018 Canadian Gold Polar Bear Coin shows Queen Elizabeth II. This portrait, designed by Susanna Blunt in 2003, presents the Queen in right-profile without a crown. It’s the fourth and final portrait of Her Majesty to appear on Canadian coins.
On the reverse, you’ll find an image of a polar bear walking across an Arctic ice shelf. Polar bears rely on sea ice to hunt for seals and travel long distances, making them especially vulnerable to changes in Arctic ice conditions and climate.
