Product Details

The 1856-O $10 Liberty Gold Eagle Coin is a historical piece from a busy time in American coin production. That year, the nation was still feeling the effects of the California Gold Rush, which brought a significant amount of gold into the U.S. economy. As a result, mints across the country struck large numbers of gold coins. The New Orleans Mint contributed a relatively small batch of $10 Liberty Eagles—just 14,500 pieces—which makes these coins more limited than others from the same year. Now, you can find 1856-O $10 Liberty Gold Eagle Coins available at BullionMax.

In 1856, the New Orleans Mint struck these $10 Liberty Gold Eagles during a time of economic growth and increased gold availability. Though the Philadelphia and San Francisco Mints produced higher volumes, New Orleans issued just 14,500 coins. These coins were made to help meet commercial demand in the expanding American South. The New Orleans Mint had been producing coins since 1838, but it operated irregularly throughout the 1850s due to changing political and financial conditions.

Each 1856-O $10 Liberty Gold Eagle in this listing ships in a plastic slab and is graded About Uncirculated 50. This grade indicates the coin has slight wear on the raised design areas and retains a good portion of its original luster. The low mintage and Southern origin make it a notable piece in the Liberty Eagle series and a tougher date to find.

The obverse of the 1856-O Liberty Gold Eagle features a portrait of Lady Liberty. Created by Christian Gobrecht, the design shows her facing left, wearing a coronet inscribed with “Liberty.” Thirteen stars surround her image, representing the original colonies, and the year of issue appears below.

On the reverse, you’ll see Gobrecht’s heraldic eagle design. The eagle is shown in front-facing relief with a shield across its chest. It holds arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other, symbolizing war and peace. This Type I version does not include the national motto, which was added to later coins. The “O” mintmark at the bottom indicates that the coin was made in New Orleans.
