Leading up to the battles, colonial riders such as Paul Revere helped spread word of the British advance. Thanks to these early warnings, local militia groups were able to gather before the troops reached Lexington. The confrontation began with a standoff on Lexington Green and quickly escalated into gunfire, resulting in the deaths of eight colonial militiamen. This pivotal moment would later be remembered as the “shot heard round the world.”
