One of the standout pieces from the Chinese Mint’s 2018–2021 series of vintage coin restrikes is the 2020 Silver Kweichow Auto Dollar. This unique issue pays tribute to the original 1928 Chinese Auto Dollar Coin, which was created to celebrate the personal touring car of Zhou Xicheng, the warlord of Kweichow province. Right now, you can find the 2020 1 oz Chinese Silver Kweichow Auto Dollar Coin restrike available at BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
The 1928 Chinese Auto Dollar, also known as the Kweichow Province silver dollar, is one of the best-known commemorative coins in Chinese numismatics. It was issued at the request of Zhou Xicheng to recognize the construction of the province’s first highway. The coin featured Zhou’s Packard automobile, which symbolized the modernization of the region.
Each 2020 1 oz Chinese Silver Kweichow Auto Dollar Coin comes with a plastic capsule for protection. These silver coins were struck with a limited mintage of just 5,000. The design takes its inspiration from the original 1928 piece, a coin that was as much a political statement as a commemorative issue, given Zhou’s exclusive ownership of a car in the area at the time.
On the obverse of the 2020 Chinese Silver Kweichow Auto Dollar, you’ll find the image of Zhou Xicheng’s Packard car. Back in the late 1920s, this American-made vehicle was a clear sign of status and foreign influence. The Packard Six model, popular among China’s elite, was prominently featured on the original coin to highlight Zhou’s control and vision of modern progress in the province.
The reverse design shows a poppy flower at the center with Chinese characters surrounding it. Zhou Xicheng ruled Kweichow Province during the Warlord Era of the 1920s, a period when central authority in China was weak. The poppy’s appearance on the coin also ties into the reality that opium production, derived from poppies, was a major source of Zhou’s income during this time.
