The obverse of the 2006-W 1 oz Reverse Proof Gold Eagle showcases Lady Liberty in a full-length image by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. First seen on the $20 Gold Double Eagle in 1907, this classic design shows Liberty striding forward with a torch raised in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. The background includes sun rays, a ring of stars, and the U.S. Capitol in the lower left.

The reverse features a family of bald eagles, created by Miley Busiek in 1986 for the Gold Eagle series. A male eagle is shown flying above a nest that holds a female eagle and her young hatchlings, symbolizing strength and family.

Since its 1986 debut, the American Gold Eagle series has included 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz gold coins. Proof versions were also introduced, starting with the 1 oz coin in the first year. The US Mint added additional sizes to the Proof lineup in 1987 and 1988.
