Ida McKinley, born Ida Saxton in 1847, was known for breaking social norms of her time. She worked as a cashier at her father’s bank, a role typically held by men. She married William McKinley in 1871, and though she later became First Lady, her health had declined significantly before she even entered the White House. Throughout her time as First Lady, her health struggles were well-known, and President McKinley was deeply committed to ensuring her well-being.

On the obverse of the 2013-W First Spouse Ida McKinley Gold Coin, you’ll find a left-facing portrait of Ida McKinley. Her husband was known for his devotion to her, often adjusting White House traditions to accommodate her needs. One example was his decision to seat her next to him at state dinners, rather than following the standard protocol of the time.

The reverse of the 2013-W 1/2 oz First Spouse Gold Coin features an image of her hands as she crochets. Despite her health difficulties, Mrs. McKinley spent much of her time crocheting slippers, which she donated to charity, with proceeds benefiting children’s causes.
