The American Platinum Eagle series debuted in 1997 with both Brilliant Uncirculated and Proof versions offered to collectors. These coins were struck in four weight options, including 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz platinum coins. In 2008, the US Mint permanently ended production of all fractional-weight Platinum Eagles in both finishes. While the 1 oz Brilliant Uncirculated version was also paused for several years, it returned to production in 2014 and resumed consistent annual mintages beginning in 2016.

Coins with this grade show strong original mint luster and may display no more than two very small imperfections. The Foundations of Democracy series followed from 2006 to 2008 and featured symbolic imagery representing the legislative, executive, and judicial branches of the US government.
