Introduced in 1979, the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf is one of the most well-known gold bullion coins. This series has a strong reputation in the bullion market, featuring Canada’s national emblem—the sugar maple leaf—alongside the reigning monarch. Today, 1 oz Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coins are available at BullionMax with random years of issue.
Coin Highlights:
Each 1 oz Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coin in this listing comes from a random year of issue. Individual coins are housed in plastic flips, while orders of 10 may be packaged in plastic tubes. These coins are struck with .9999 pure gold, a standard first introduced in 1983. Prior to that, Gold Maple Leafs from 1979 to 1982 contained .999 pure gold. Due to the softness of 24-karat gold, minor imperfections such as small scratches or marks are common.
For most of its history, the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Series featured Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse. From its launch in 1979 until 2023, the design included four different portraits of the Queen. In 2024, a new effigy of King Charles III was introduced. Since 1990, these monarch portraits have been created by Canadian artists.
The obverse of the 1 oz Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coin displays either Queen Elizabeth II or King Charles III, depending on the year of issue. Coins in this listing will be from 1983 onward. Designs featuring Queen Elizabeth II include Arnold Machin’s portrait (1983-1989), Dora de Pedery-Hunt’s depiction (1990-2004), and Susanna Blunt’s effigy (2005-2023). The latest design by Steven Rosati, introduced in 2024, presents a left-profile portrait of King Charles III.
The reverse of the Gold Maple Leaf features the sugar maple leaf, an iconic national emblem of Canada. This design, first introduced in 1979, was created by Walter Ott and remains a defining feature of the series.
