Product Details

The Royal Mint in London is among the world’s longest-running mints. For more than a thousand years it has produced coins for the United Kingdom, creating many pieces that remain sought after today. If you’re interested in classic gold issues with real history, Great Britain Gold Sovereign Coins are now available through BullionMax.

Coin Highlights:

  • Arrives in a protective plastic flip!
  • Random Year and Condition!
  • Historic coins first struck in 1817!
  • Contains 0.2354 oz actual gold weight.
  • Obverse and reverse designs vary by year — most feature Benedetto Pistrucci’s St. George and the Dragon on the reverse, with the reigning monarch on the obverse.
  • Most struck at Royal Mint.
  • Mixed types of coins available.

As the British Empire expanded, these gold coins circulated widely and became familiar in many parts of the world. The early English gold sovereign last appeared in 1604, taking its name from the portrait of the sovereign ruler shown on the coin.

Modern Great Britain Gold Sovereign Coins returned in 1817 after the Great Recoinage of 1816. They were issued annually for a century, with only a single year of production between 1917 and 1957 (struck in 1925). Regular minting resumed in 1957, and the coins continue today as BU and proof pieces from The Royal Mint.

Great Britain Gold Sovereign coins commonly feature the same reverse artwork: St. George on horseback battling a dragon. Designed in 1817 by Benedetto Pistrucci, this design typically includes the year of issue on the reverse.

The obverse of each gold sovereign carries a profile of the reigning monarch of the United Kingdom. Earlier pieces display Queen Victoria at three stages of her reign, along with portraits of King Edward VII and King George V. Coins made after 1957 feature Queen Elizabeth II, represented in three different right-facing portraits over time.

Most sovereigns were produced by The Royal Mint in London. At various points, additional production took place in Australia, Canada, and South Africa, and some modern pieces have been struck by MMTC-PAMP in Delhi, India. Please note that this listing is fulfilled at random. You will receive a Great Britain Gold Sovereign, but we cannot honor requests for specific dates, designs, conditions, or for BU versus proof. Selection occurs after your order is processed.
