The 1885 release of the Morgan Silver Dollar is significant for its production at four different US Mint branch locations and the end of a continuous streak in production involving these mints. From the series debut in 1878 through 1885, the coins were struck annually at four branch mints. After this year, the coins would only be produced at four locations four more times between 1889 and 1904, and again in 1921. Right now, you can purchase 1885-S Morgan Silver Dollar Coins with certified grades authenticated by the CAC from BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
The 1885-S Morgan Silver Dollar Coins offered here are in Mint State 65+ condition. Coins in this grade are known for their exceptional visual appeal, with only light, scattered contact marks and no major distractions in the primary focal areas. These coins feature minimal hairlines, and their luster is notably strong. The Certified Acceptance Corporation (CAC) has authenticated the MS65 grade assigned by the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS).
In 1885, the US Mint produced Morgan Dollars at the Philadelphia Mint, New Orleans Mint, Carson City Mint, and the San Francisco Mint. The closure of the Carson City Mint from 1886 to 1888 meant that only three mints struck Morgan Dollars during the next three years, ending the streak of four-mint production. The use of four mints would resume briefly from 1889 to 1893, before the final closure of the Carson City Mint.
The obverse of the 1885-S Morgan Dollar features Lady Liberty. Designed by George T. Morgan, this depiction shows Liberty in left-profile relief wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with a laurel wreath and a coronet crown. Thirteen stars surround her on this side of the coin.
On the reverse of the 1885-S Morgan Silver Dollar, the heraldic eagle is prominently displayed. This design, also by Morgan, portrays a front-facing bald eagle with its wings spread wide. The eagle holds the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace in its talons, symbolizing strength and diplomacy.
