Proof American Gold Eagles have been part of the United States Mint’s lineup since 1986. The series began with the 1 oz gold coin and expanded in the following two years to include smaller weights. In the early 2000s, production of Proof Gold Eagles stayed below levels seen in the late 1990s. For the 1 oz version in particular, annual mintages were under 30,000 between 2000 and 2004. The 2004 release was no exception, with a mintage of just over 28,000.

Each 2004-W 1 oz Proof American Gold Eagle Coin is packaged in a U.S. Mint display box, complete with a themed outer shipper and a Certificate of Authenticity. The coin itself is held in a protective capsule. These proof coins are made of 22-karat gold, with a composition of 91.67% gold, 5.33% copper, and 3% silver. The frosted visuals contrast with the mirrored background to give each coin its distinctive look.

The obverse design shows Liberty walking forward, holding a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other. This design was first created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens for the $20 Double Eagle and has become one of the most well-known images in U.S. coinage. In the background, you can see rays of sunlight and the Capitol building.

On the reverse, the design by Miley Busiek highlights a family of bald eagles. A male eagle is flying above the nest, while the female and their eaglets rest below. The design reflects themes of family, care, and strength.
