Product Details

China introduced the Gold Panda Series in 1982 with four sizes: 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz. A year later, the 1/20 oz coin joined the lineup. Known for its annual design changes featuring the Giant Panda, this series has become a favorite for collectors. Today, BullionMax offers the 1998 1/20 oz Chinese Gold Panda Coin.

Coin Highlights:

  • Comes in protective plastic packaging!
  • 17th coin in the Gold Panda Series!
  • Mintage limited to 106,108 coins!
  • Contains 1/20 Troy oz of .999 pure gold.
  • Bears a face value of 5 Yuan backed by the government of China.
  • Obverse depicts the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests.
  • Reverse shows a panda reclining with bamboo on a rock.

Each 1998 1/20 oz Chinese Gold Panda Coin arrives sealed in its original plastic packaging. Native to central China’s mountainous regions, giant pandas are closely tied to their bamboo forest habitat. Though they’re part of the Carnivora order, these animals primarily eat bamboo and have adapted to thrive on it.

Pandas rely on bamboo for more than food. Since bamboo grows in cycles—flowering, dying, and regenerating—pandas may travel between elevations to follow its growth. This close link makes them especially vulnerable when their habitat is disrupted.

The obverse of the 1998 Chinese Gold Panda Coin features the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests. This building stands in the Temple of Heaven in Beijing and was used by emperors to ask for good harvests. Its circular design and surrounding platform are shown in great detail.

On the reverse side of the 1998 1/20 oz Gold Panda Coin, a panda is shown lounging on a rock, holding a stalk of bamboo. Although their bodies are built like carnivores, pandas spend much of their time eating bamboo—sometimes up to 40 pounds per day—to get enough nutrients.
