Product Details

The Chinese Gold Panda series has been a key part of the bullion market since its debut in 1982. These coins were originally issued in traditional Troy ounce sizes, starting with 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz gold coins. A 1/20 oz option was added in 1983. One thing that has made this series stand out over the years is the changing design of the Giant Panda featured on each new release. Today, BullionMax offers the 1998 1/2 oz Chinese Gold Panda Coin online.

Coin Highlights:

  • Coin arrives in a sealed plastic pouch!
  • 17th year for the Gold Panda Series!
  • Small Date specimens!
  • Limited mintage of only 4,168 coins!
  • Contains 1/2 Troy oz of .999 pure gold.
  • Issued a face value of 50 Yuan by China.
  • Obverse features the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests.
  • Reverse includes a depiction of a panda with bamboo in its paw.

The obverse of the 1998 1/2 oz Gold Panda Coin features the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests. This building is part of the Temple of Heaven complex in Beijing and has been shown on Gold Panda Coins since the series began. The design captures the structure’s exterior view with careful detail.

On the reverse of the 1998 Gold Panda, you’ll see that year’s unique Giant Panda design. The panda is shown sitting on a rock, holding a small bamboo branch in its paw. More bamboo appears in the background. Pandas are known for their highly specialized diet, which is made up almost entirely of bamboo, even though their digestive systems are more typical of carnivores.

While bamboo makes up the vast majority of their diet, pandas will sometimes eat other plants, small animals, or eggs if available. Because they only absorb a small portion of the nutrients in bamboo, they tend to have low energy levels and slower reproduction rates than other bear species.

Each 1998 1/2 oz Chinese Gold Panda Coin is packaged in a sealed plastic pouch. These coins are Small Date versions, meaning the numerals in the year are smaller and more compact. Just 4,168 of these coins were made in total.
