The Chinese Gold Panda Series is a popular gold bullion collection first issued by the Chinese Mint in 1982. Known for its annually changing panda designs, the series originally featured 1 oz and fractional-ounce gold coins. Though modern releases are measured in grams, earlier Troy-ounce versions remain highly sought after. Right now, 1985 1/4 oz Chinese Gold Panda Coins are available at BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
The 1985 Gold Panda design highlights the playful nature of young pandas. Panda cubs are born blind, weighing just around 100 grams, but they grow quickly and develop distinct, energetic personalities. This particular design captures a cub clinging to a bamboo shoot, an image that reflects the curiosity and playfulness of these beloved animals.
Each 1985 1/4 oz Chinese Gold Panda Coin comes individually sealed in a plastic pouch. This release was the fourth in the Gold Panda Series, continuing the tradition of a new panda design each year. While today’s Gold Pandas are issued in metric weights, this 1/4 oz version predates the transition and remains a treasured collectible.
The obverse of the 1985 Chinese Gold Panda Coin features the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests, the main building within Beijing’s Temple of Heaven complex. Built in the early 15th century, this Taoist temple was historically used by Chinese emperors to pray for a successful harvest.
On the reverse of the 1985 1/4 oz Gold Panda Coin, you’ll find an illustration of a young panda cub grasping a bamboo shoot. As pandas grow, they become more adventurous, climbing and playing among the bamboo—a behavior beautifully captured in this coin’s design.
