Product Details

One of the more unusual gold coins made by the United States Mint was the Pre-33 $3 Gold Coin. First authorized by the Act of February 21, 1853, the coin was created by US Mint Chief Engraver James B. Longacre. The $3 coin was produced for 35 years with its designs staying the same until 1889, the final year it was struck. Today, you can find 1889 Pre-33 $3 Indian Princess Gold Coins in Mint State condition available from BullionMax.

Each 1889 Pre-33 $3 Indian Princess Gold Coin listed here comes in a secure slab and is graded Mint State 63 by PCGS. Coins at this grade often show average or slightly weak strikes with moderate abrasions and light hairlines, but they still carry good eye appeal for collectors.

The $3 Indian Princess Gold Coin was minted between 1854 and 1889 and represented one of the most unusual denominations in US history. The main goal of the $3 coin was to make it easier to buy full sheets of three-cent stamps. However, the odd denomination prevented it from becoming widely used, so surviving coins are now sought after by collectors.

The obverse side of the 1889 Pre-33 Indian Princess Gold Coin displays Lady Liberty facing left, wearing a feathered headdress. Surrounding her portrait is the country’s name along the rim of the coin.

On the reverse side of the 1889 $3 Indian Princess Gold Coin, the design centers around the face value and year of issue. These elements are enclosed by a wreath that wraps around the middle of the coin.
